چکیده
AIM To assess the interference of nail polish on the reading of peripheral oxygen saturation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the step exercise. METHODS In this study, there was the inclusion of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, current non-smokers, of both sexes. Four different colours of nail polish were used in the present study (base, light pink, red and brown), randomly distributed among the fingers of the right hand, with the corresponding fingers on the opposite hand being controls. Saturation was measured at rest, with and without the polish, and also during the 4th, 5th and 6th minutes of the exercise programme. RESULTS The experimental universe included 42 patients with ages of 62.9±8.7 years. In the exercise considered, the red colour reduced it in the fourth minute of the exercise (p=0.047). In contrast, the brown colour reduced saturation at rest and also during the course of exercise (p=0.01). CONCLUSION In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the red and brown colours interfered with the reading of the peripheral oxygen saturation during exercise. This study is registered at the Brazilian Register of Clinical Trials (Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos) under No. RBR-9vc722.

Effect of Nail Polish on Pulse Oximetry Findings in Healthy Volunteers: A Randomized Clinical Trail
Background and Objectives: Pulse oximetry is the most common technique for monitoring hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2). Different colors and brands of nail polish may cause disturbance in the reading and interpretation of oxygen saturation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different colors of nail polish on oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximeter. Methods: Thirty he...
متن کامل[Influence of nail polish on pulse oximeter readings of oxygen saturation: a systematic review].
EN Nail polish has traditionally been assumed to absorb light emitted by pulse oximeters and to interfere with the detection and measurement of oxygenated hemoglobin. In a systematic review of the literature we aimed to assess the influence of nail polish on the measurement of oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2). A search protocol for online databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Sc...
متن کاملNail polish does not significantly affect pulse oximetry measurements in mildly hypoxic subjects.
BACKGROUND The effect of nail polish on pulse oximetry measurements in non-hypoxic subjects has been studied extensively. Some studies found that nail polish decreased pulse-oximetry (S(pO(2))) values, whereas others found no effects from nail polish. OBJECTIVE To determine if nail polish affects S(pO(2)) measurements in mildly hypoxic subjects. METHODS At high altitude, 5 investigators, wh...
متن کاملExercise peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) accurately reflects arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and predicts mortality in systemic sclerosis.
BACKGROUND Measures of oxygenation have not been assessed for prognostic significance in systemic sclerosis-related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). METHODS 83 subjects with SSc-ILD performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test with an arterial line. The agreement between peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was examined and survival differences be...
متن کاملThe Significance of BODE (BMI, Obstruction, Dyspnea, Exercise) Index in Patients with Mustard Lung
Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) secondary to sulfur mustard exposure, known as mustard lung, is an important late pulmonary complication. The BODE (Body mass index, Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise) index has been established as a valuable tool for determining the adverse consequences of COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the BODE index in pat...
